Did you know that:
Yes, Al Capone spent time in Wisconsin. He owned a fortified summer home near Hayward, where he would have whiskey flown in from Canada. Additionally, he had a vacation home in Brookfield, chosen for its lack of police presence, which allowed him to operate more freely. However, evidence suggests he did not spend extensive time in the state, and when he did, he generally behaved himself
Al Capone engaged in various leisure activities while in Wisconsin. He often visited the state for relaxation and recreation, particularly in areas like Lake Geneva and Mercer. His activities included:
- Hunting and Fishing: Capone enjoyed hunting game and fishing in the Wisconsin wilderness, which provided a peaceful escape from his criminal life.
- Golfing: He participated in backwoods golf, taking advantage of the natural landscapes.
- Socializing: Capone spent time with friends and family, often hosting gatherings at lodges.
- Relaxation: He was known to enjoy lying in hammocks and listening to opera records.
Al Capone owned several notable properties in Wisconsin.
- Hideout in Northern Wisconsin: This property featured guard towers and thick stone walls, serving as a retreat for Capone during his time evading law enforcement. It was sold for $2.6 million in 2009.
- Lodge in Mercer: After his incarceration, Capone's brother Ralph purchased land in Mercer, where they built a lodge for family reunions.
- Lakefront Mansion in Elkhorn: A historic property with possible connections to Capone is currently listed for sale at $4.49 million. It is rumored to have secret rooms and ties to the Roaring 20
